Why we recommend it: When the dense Chapter 14 ITM tables or Chapter 17 spot-detector spacing rules stop making sense in the bare code, the handbook commentary unblocks you faster than any blog post can.

Fluke 117 Electrician's True-RMS Multimeter
The most common multimeter on a fire alarm tech's bench — true-RMS, CAT III 600 V, with built-in non-contact voltage detection and Fluke's low-impedance LoZ mode that ignores ghost voltage on long SLC runs.
Why we recommend it: Field-verifies the answers our voltage-drop calculator and battery-sizing calculator give you. If the math says you've got margin and the Fluke reads otherwise, you've got a wire problem the spec sheet didn't predict.

Why we recommend it: The required-SPL calculator and ambient-noise calculator on this site both assume a Type 2 SLM. NFPA 72 explicitly requires it for audibility testing — a phone-app dB meter will fail an AHJ review.
