Purpose of Referenced Publications
Chapter 2 of NFPA 72 compiles a comprehensive list of all standards, codes, and other publications that are referenced within the body of the code. When a publication is cited in a mandatory section of NFPA 72, compliance with that referenced publication becomes a requirement. This chapter ensures that users can identify the exact edition of each standard that applies, maintaining consistency in system design, installation, and maintenance.
Key Referenced Standards
Among the most frequently referenced standards are those published by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), including UL 217 for smoke alarms, UL 268 for smoke detectors, UL 864 for fire alarm control units, and UL 2572 for mass notification systems. Factory Mutual (FM) approvals and listings are also referenced. NFPA’s own family of codes, such as NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), and NFPA 1 (Fire Code), are frequently cross-referenced to ensure interoperability between fire protection disciplines.
Mandatory vs. Informational References
It is important to distinguish between mandatory references and informational references. Mandatory references appear in the enforceable body of the code and must be followed. Informational references are listed in annexes and serve as supplementary guidance; they are not required for compliance but provide valuable context. Understanding this distinction is essential for exam preparation and proper code application.
Editions and Applicability
Chapter 2 specifies the exact edition year of each referenced publication. When a new edition of NFPA 72 is adopted, the referenced editions of companion standards may also change. Practitioners must verify which edition of each referenced standard corresponds to the adopted edition of NFPA 72 in their jurisdiction to ensure full compliance.
