What’s New in NFPA 72 2025?

The 2025 edition of NFPA 72 introduces several significant changes that fire alarm professionals need to understand. Here are the key updates:

Cybersecurity Requirements (Chapter 11)

One of the biggest additions is the expanded cybersecurity chapter. What was previously a single section has been expanded to 13 sections covering:

• Security Level 1 (SL1) through Security Level 3 (SL3) classifications
• Network architecture documentation requirements
• Access control requirements for networked fire alarm systems
• Cybersecurity documentation and maintenance

Updated Testing Intervals

Several testing intervals have been modified:

• CO detectors now must alarm within 12 minutes at 70 ppm (reduced from 30 minutes)
• Heat detectors must be replaced at 15 years (laboratory testing option removed)
• DART/RAT testing now required semi-annually
• Impairment notification threshold reduced to 8 hours

Trouble Signal Timing

The trouble signal indication time has been updated to 60 seconds, requiring faster detection and reporting of system faults.

Circuit and Pathway Changes

• Level 2/3 cable fire resistance rating increased to 2 hours
• NEC Article 840 now referenced for network-based pathways
• Updated requirements for shared pathway considerations

Software Storage

Fire alarm system software can now be stored at remote locations, subject to AHJ approval, making system maintenance and restoration more flexible.
